Each month our kids participate in a reading challenge, with a reward for achieving 100 minutes each week for the month. For the month of September, their reward was a ticket to the Gwinnett Gladiators game through the Hat Trick for Reading program.
We had the option of attending either a Friday or Saturday night game. We ended up going on Friday because the rest of our weekend was full. We didn’t tell the kids where we were going, so they had no clue until we actually walked up to the arena. They were so excited, as we have never been to a hockey game before.
Once we got in and seated, I explained to them briefly how hockey works. I’m no expert, I just googled it earlier in the day, lol! There was lots of cheering and chanting going on, and they weren’t quite sure how to behave. After a few minutes though, they got into it and started clapping and yelling along with the crowd.
While the older kids definitely had a great time, my younger ones were bored and ready to go by the middle of the second period. Hockey just isn’t something that a 4 and 5 year old can follow very well, especially with the speed that the puck is moving! To their credit, they normally go to bed between 7:30 and 8:00, so they were out way past when they would normally be asleep
Even my seven year old son was disenchanted after the second period. I will say though, he did perk up once the game went into overtime!
Overall, I think everyone had a great time, parents included! We will definitely go again in the future, but only if we have a sitter for the younger two.
If you’re in the Atlanta are and would be interested in checking out a Gladiators game, Groupon has a deal right now on tickets!
Do you take your kids to sporting events? If so, do they stay entertained the whole time?

Looks like you all had a great time!!

We did! I just learned that a hockey game definitely won’t keep the little ones entertained for very long, lol!
